Dual MdSHA Bridges on I-70

Project Overview:

On October 18th, 2012, Hetzer was awarded SHA Contract WA416 for the replacement of Dual Bridges on I-70 over MD Rte. 63 in Washington County. The project began in November 2012.  The work included the complete replacement of concrete footings and substructure, as well as the steel and concrete superstructures for both the eastbound and westbound bridges.  While the existing bridges each had three piers and four spans, the new bridges each have only one pier and two spans.  The work was accomplished in four stages.  Stage 1 was for temporary I-70 roadway widening.  Stages 2 and 3 were for bridge reconstruction. Stage 4 was for final pavement and median drainage improvements.  Two interstate traffic lanes were maintained in both directions, and no temporary bridge or detours was employed.  Centerline shoring for support of excavation was accomplished using lagged H-pile and "Reinforced Earth" walls. Originally awarded at $11,850,570, change orders brought the final billing to about $12,680,180.  Some significant work quantities include:

  • 1,340-LF of HP14x89 Pile for Bridge Foundations
  • 2,340-CY of Structural Concrete
  • 214-TONS Rebar
  • 271-TONS Structural Steel
  • 9,840-TONS Graded Aggregate Stone Base
